Georgetown Cliff

now closed :(

If you’ve never been to The Cliff, you’re missing out on a true Georgetown classic. The Cliff is the original site of the aqueduct bridge between Georgetown and Rosslyn, Virginia. It was closed after the construction of the Key Bridge and then later demolished. Be wary about coming to the Cliff as it is technically illegal, however, I wouldn’t be too worried about getting caught during the day. Around sunset, expect cops to be standing at the entrance. You can’t blame them, it’s rather dangerous to hang out on a cliff at night. On a nice day expect a decent crowd of easy-going, friendly people. You should dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared for a little mud while walking to the Cliff. Bring a blanket to sit on, water, and snacks. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic!

GETTING THERE

There are two ways to get to the Cliff. The first is by walking west down K Street underneath the Whitehurst Freeway until you reach a boat house and a bridge. If the boathouse is on your left there will be a staircase on your right. At the top of the staircase, you’ll find the cliff on the left. The other way to get there is by walking west along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. You’ll need to be on the south side of the canal, or the side that faces the Potomac. This will lead you to where the top of the stairs is. The Cliff is surrounded by a small bit of fencing, jump over, and enjoy!
